Behind the Glass: Always Game with Brian Shepard

Welcome back to Behind the Glass, our Q&A series from the Buffalo Squash Racquets Association (BSRA) that takes you off the court and into the lives of the people helping shape Buffalo’s squash scene. Each feature highlights a different BSRA Board member—sharing their journey, role, and vision for the community.

Meet Brian Shepard, BSRA D League Coordinator and liaison to the Nardin Athletic and Aquatic Center. Whether he’s organizing matches, welcoming new players, or hiking Western New York with his family, Brian brings warmth, humor, and a love of the game to the court.

In one sentence, describe your role on the BSRA Board.
My role on the BSRA board is D League Coordinator and NAAC liaison.

How long have you been in that role?
2.5 years.

Tell us about your squash story—when did you start and how?
I’ve been playing squash for 9.5 years (seriously for the last 5). My youngest daughter had just been born and my family were members of the JCC. I was looking for a hobby and workout—jogging and weights weren’t for me—so I wandered into the sub-basement of the JCC and met some wonderful people who introduced me to the sport.

In one word, how would you describe your squash ability?
Adequate.

What is your favorite part about being a member of the Buffalo squash community?
How much squash there is here—there are year-round opportunities to play a ton of squash.

What is one exciting thing BSRA members should be excited about regarding the future of Buffalo squash?
The continued growth of the squash community here—or explaining the rules of squash to friends and family during the 2028 Olympics (jk).

Outside of squash, I can be found…
Hiking Western New York with my family and smoking meats at home.

What is one thing the community should know about you?
I’m always down for a match.
