Welcome back to Behind the Glass, our Q&A series from the Buffalo Squash Racquets Association (BSRA) that takes you off the court and into the lives of the people helping shape Buffalo’s squash scene. Each feature highlights a different BSRA Board member—sharing their journey, role, and vision for the community.
Meet Michael Kanaley, the BSRA’s representative from the Saturn Club. Whether coordinating Super Saturday or the annual end-of-season celebration, Michael brings enthusiasm, persistence, and a love for the game to every event he helps bring to life.

In one sentence, describe your role on the BSRA Board.
I am the Saturn Club representative on the BSRA board, and my role is to help coordinate any BSRA events that take place at the Club (e.g. Super Saturday and the BSRA end-of-year celebration!).
How long have you been in that role?
Two years.
Tell us about your squash story—when did you start and how?
Steve Joyce saw me wandering around the Saturn fitness center one day and put a racket in my hand. He taught me the basics, introduced me to some of the other squash players in the Club, and I’ve been playing on the D team since then.
In one word, how would you describe your squash ability?
Persistent.
What is your favorite part about being a member of the Buffalo squash community?
As a relatively new member of the BSRA community, I’ve been inspired by the openness and dedication of everyone involved. From the very beginning, I’ve felt welcomed and encouraged—whether playing formally in league matches or informally in casual “hit arounds.” I’ve also enjoyed learning about the history and legacy of squash in Buffalo and witnessing BSRA members’ commitment to evangelizing the sport, putting on world-class events, and growing the sport locally.
What is one exciting thing BSRA members should be excited about regarding the future of Buffalo squash?
The packed calendar of tournaments and activities. The BSRA board has put together a series of events over the next year that will put a spotlight on Buffalo’s vibrant squash community and create plenty of opportunities for friendly competition.
Outside of squash, I can be found…
Traveling with my family or pounding the pavement in preparation for my next half-marathon in the fall.
