Behind the Glass: Building Bridges with James Hubbell

Welcome back to Behind the Glass, our Q&A series from the Buffalo Squash Racquets Association (BSRA) that takes you off the court and into the lives of the people helping shape Buffalo’s squash scene. Each feature highlights a different BSRA Board member—sharing their journey, role, and vision for the community.

Meet James Hubbell, who serves as the vital link between the BSRA and The Buffalo Club. Whether it’s helping coordinate tournaments or keeping members in the loop, James brings thoughtful communication to the heart of our community.

In one sentence, describe your role on the BSRA Board.
I act as the liaison between the BSRA and the Buffalo Club, ensuring that key tournaments, initiatives, etc. are communicated to the Buffalo Club squash community.

How long have you been in that role?
This is my second squash season in the role.

Tell us about your squash story—when did you start and how?
I started playing squash as a kid and continued for three years in high school. After a 15-year break, I picked it up again when I moved to Buffalo!

In one sentence, how would you describe your squash ability?
Not as good as CJ or Rauty.

What is your favorite part about being a member of the Buffalo squash community?
Since I’m not from Buffalo originally, playing squash has helped me make great new friends and I’m really thankful for that.

What is one exciting thing BSRA members should be excited about regarding the future of Buffalo squash?
Participation is fantastic at all three clubs and Nardin—the game is being introduced to more and more people.

Outside of squash, I can be found…
In my backyard with my two young boys.
